Mike Bohacek received one of the 2022 Legislative Excellence Awards from the Indiana Prosecuting Attorney’s Council, recognizing his contributions to expanding public safety. Each year, IPAC bestows these awards to commend individuals for their efforts in legislation. The recent awardees were chosen for their significant role in shaping legislation during the 2022 session, particularly addressing issues related to survivors of rape, human trafficking, and child sexual abuse.

Expressing gratitude for the recognition, Bohacek stated, “I am honored to be chosen for an award in acknowledgment of my legislative work that seeks to clarify the definition of rape. Creating and passing bills that bring about genuine positive changes in the lives of Hoosiers is a priority for me. I appreciate the recognition from IPAC, highlighting the collective efforts of my colleagues and me.”

Bohacek played a pivotal role in the enactment of House Enrolled Act 1079, which revised the definition of rape. The amendment broadened the scope to include situations where someone’s attempts to refuse sexual actions, whether physical or verbal, are disregarded. Prior to this change, Indiana law only considered charging someone with rape if the victim had been threatened, forced, or was mentally incapacitated or unaware of the occurrence of intercourse.
